Title: Write about a school event that you have participated or enjoyed.
“Stop taking your own sweet time. Please take it seriously, girls.” Ms. Zhao, our form teacher exclaimed sternly, while she was staring at them and pointing towards the field.
The Sun shone mercilessly and we were commemorating Total Defence Day by having a fire drill. It marked the surrender of the British to the Japanese on 15 February 1942.
When the siren sounded, all the students and staffs had to line up outside the class and proceed to the safe place, field. This is to familiarize us with the evacuation route when a real fire happens, but some of the girls in my class lacked the sense of urgency. They played, had fun and chatted during the whole fire drill. Ms. Zhao was right to reproach them for not being serious.
We gathered at the field. The rays of the sun were raining down on me; I just could not hide from massive sweat pitted on my uniform. There were irritating insects, which were harmless, but made us itchy. Some more, we needed to squat down on the field.
“Can you guys please settle down quickly? It was very hot, I know. The faster you settle down, the faster I can dismiss you to the hall. The timing from the classes to a safe place is definitely not acceptable! It could be improved!” announce Mr. Tan firmly.
Then, we were dismissed to the hall. The hall was more comfortable. We had an assembly programs put up by the Red Cross Youth and National Cadet Corps. They explained some of the five aspects of Total Defence, which are Military, Social, Civil, Economic and Psychological.
The Red Cross Youth demonstrated Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). I thought CPR is important as it can save a life. The National Cadet Corps performed their free style and showed us what a war would be like. I dislike war. War makes the residents live in danger. There might be a bomb firing down to your houses all of a sudden. Your relatives and friends may die because of war.
Lastly, a girl from 4NA sang a song-“Home”. Home, is a place where we can feel warmth and need not worry about anything. You will just be happy and comfortable at home. The girl used her sweet voice to touch us. It was an amazing ending.
Total Defence Day teaches us to be responsible for our country. The country belongs to all of us. Defending Singapore, our home, is the responsibility of everyone, regardless of race, language or religion. Although I am a foreigner from Malaysia, I will still defend Singapore when she is in danger. It is because I am here; Singapore is my second home.
