The alarm clock rang my consciousness up while I was trying to hover between the conscious and subconscious planes. I forced my eyes to open up, and I rubbed the sleep from the corners of my eyes. I stretched out my arms. Finally, I was able to get myself into the shower.
“Oh! Today is International Friendship Day!” I blurted out after the icy water hit my skin. That certainly woke me up. After bathing and getting my stuffs ready, I rushed to the MRT station and had my way to school.
Our school commemorated International Friendship Day on the third working Friday of Term 2. International Friendship Day is a day dedicated to the understanding of Singapore’s relations with neighboring countries and beyond, as well as nurtures in the students the spirit of friendship and collaboration among different people. As a Malaysian, I set up a booth with friends from Malaysia such as Pearly, Jia Yee and Michael to exhibit cultures and food in Malaysia during recess.

We were very busy that day, so I got to walk around the various countries’ booth for only short time. They are Philippines, China, Indonesia, Cambodia and of course Singapore. Every participant was trying their best to let as many people to know about the cultures. Stefi from Respect one even wore a Sari.
We used iPad to slide show pictures about Malaysia. Besides, we played songs, which are sung by Malaysian singers. We got feedback that they just knew that there is also Tamil Language in Malaysia. We are glad that they can know more about our country.
Pearly prepared snacks and Nasi Lemak for our booth to sell. The Nasi Lemak was the center of attention that day! There were endless customers for the Nasi Lemak. We managed to earn seventy dollars, and we are one of the most successful booth.
Through this meaningful event, I understand that international relations are based on congruence of interests and are different in nature from friendship between individuals. However, everywhere, people express love for their friends and cherish their presence in life, they cannot live without each other.
